Mary Shin, MBE, MPhil

Mary Shin, MSc, MPhil is a Senior Science & Technology Officer for the UK Science & Technology Network in the US, based at the British Consulate-General in Boston. She received her BS in electrical engineering with a double major in psychology and a minor in mathematics from Johns Hopkins University, an MPhil in technology policy from the University of Cambridge, UK, and an MSc in Bioethics from Harvard Medical School. While focusing on all aspects of UK-US science & technology collaboration in the New England region, she also leads the engineering biology sector for the US Network and serves as the deputy lead for the biosecurity, One Health, & AMR sector. As an undergraduate, she conducted behavioral research in computational audio perception and served as the co-president of the JHU chapter for the Society of Women Engineers. Her graduate studies have focused on diverse areas including the ethical challenges of AI and digital health tech regulation, as well as hospital decision-making frameworks for patient prioritization and resource allocation. Currently, Mary is part of the Introduction to Research Ethics teaching team, with a particular interest in science diplomacy and research in emerging technologies such as AI and synthetic biology.
