Akwi W. Asombang MD, MPH, MSc is an interventional gastroenterologist, the Director of Global Health Programs in Gastroenterology at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), and an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She received her medical from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, India. She completed her advanced endoscopy fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medicine Center (BIDMC), Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts. She completed her gastroenterology fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine, St Louis, Missouri and NIH Fogarty International Clinical Research fellowship. Prior to her fellowships she completed a combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics residency at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, Missouri and her MPH at Saint Louis University School of Public Health.

Dr. Asombang attained her Master of Science in Bioethics at Harvard Medical School. She continues to explore ethical challenges in global health. She has extensive service to multiple national professional societies and experience in global health including clinical experience in Zambia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Ghana and India. She is the co-founder of Pan-African Organization for Health, Education and Research (POHER) - a non-governmental organization mobilizing healthcare resources in Africa. She is the founder of The African Association of Future gastroenterologists (AAFG), a platform to mentor and support early career gastroenterologists, gastroenterology fellows, residents and medical students interested in gastroenterology. She is one of the founding members of the African Hepatopancreatobiliary Cancer Consortium, an organization founded in 2021 with the objective of expanding knowledge and developing a skilled network of experts on the liver, biliary, and pancreatic cancers in Africa and worldwide. She is a recipient of numerous international wards for clinical service, medical education, training and mentorship.
