When a lifesaving technology becomes “a bridge to nowhere”

Center Director Robert D. Truog, MD, MA is quoted in an essay by Daniela Lamas for the New York Times, about the ethical complexities of providing life-sustaining care for a patient nearing the end of life.

"When I've encountered situations like these, there are always people who say, quite reasonably, that we are not here just to keep people alive on machines," said Truog. "But then I think, why not? Why not go until it can't be done anymore or he or his family tell us to stop?"
