Problematic state bill would allow state prisoners to donate organs in exchange for reduced sentences

A state bill proposed by some Massachusetts legislators would allow persons in jail to donate organs in exchange for reductions to their sentences. Center Director Robert Truog, MD, MA was quoted in a Boston Globe article about the bill. Truog, and other ethicists quoted in the article, described the ethical shortcomings of such a policy, particularly given the fatal risks of organ donation by a living donor, and the increased risk of coercion that accompanies incarceration.
