Advocating to give all patients the right to choose organ donation

Center MBE alumna Courtney Sas, MSW, MBE has co-authored a Hastings Center Bioethics Forum essay on the importance of respecting patients' autonomy by honoring their preferences for organ donation. Sas and her co-author point out a discrepancy between patients electing Medical Aid in Dying (MAID), whose election of organ donation is consistently respected, and patients dying of other causes, whose decision to elect organ donation is frequently overridden by their family members following their deaths. "Organ donation is a courageous and altruistic act," they write. "For those who are brave enough to come forward and decide to do it, their autonomy should be celebrated and protected."
