In the aftermath of Roe v. Wade's reversal, many states have outlawed abortion. To secure abortion access, the FDA has passed new regulations allowing pharmacies to dispense abortion pills directly to consumers—but logistical issues remain. Ameet Sarpatwari PhD, JD, a Member of the Center, spoke to the Washington Post for an article about those challenges, and the likelihood of access to abortion pills from pharmacies in the near future. Small pharmacies, in particular, seem unlikely to incur the cost and administrative burden of obtaining approval to dispense abortions. This is particularly true for pharmacies in close proximity to states where abortion has been outlawed. Sarpatwari told the Washington Post, "It may be they want to be well insulated.”
