Dr. Kaufman is Senior Consultant within the Hematology-Oncology department at Massachusetts General Hospital and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School (Pt). He obtained his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine and completed residency training in medicine at Bronx Municipal Hospital Center. Since completing his residency, Dr. Kaufman has become a nationally recognized leader in the fields of hematology and oncology, having served as Clinical Director of Oncology Service at Beth Israel Hospital and Assistant Chief and Chief of Hematology and Oncology Service at Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco prior to coming to MGH. He also has demonstrated a professional commitment to academic medicine, having served in a variety of faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School for the past 50 years. Dr. Kaufman’s core clinical activity is the Mass General Optimum Care Committee (OCC) and Biomedical Ethics program, where he performs consultations with families of terminally ill patients, by physician trainees, staff physicians and/or nurses. In especially challenging cases, he engages in conflict resolution in accordance with policies approved by Mass General.
Dr. Kaufman has authored or co-authored more than 100 original papers published in medical journals with international circulation. Dr. Kaufman is also a well-known national and international speaker, having given numerous presentations at regional, national and international meetings throughout his career. In addition to his work on the OCC, Dr. Kaufman currently serves on several committees at Mass General, including the Biomedical Ethics Program, the Patient Experience Council and the Illuminations Committee. Additionally, he serves on the Harvard Medical Area Ethics Consortium.
