Dr. Sayeed completed his undergraduate degree in government at Dartmouth College in 1990, his law degree at the University of Michigan in 1993, and his medical degree at the University of Iowa in 2000. He completed his internship and residency in pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco, and remained there for a fellowship in perinatal-neonatal medicine. From 2005 to 2006 he was a clinical instructor at UCSF in the Department of Pediatrics and an adjunct lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law. He was appointed as an instructor (part-time) in the HMS Department of Global Health and Social Medicine in the summer of 2006 as a result of a nationwide search for an ethicist. He then joined the Boston Children’s Hospital Newborn Medicine staff as an Attending Neonatologist. He was promoted to Assistant Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine and Pediatrics in 2012.
Dr. Sayeed continues to serve in a number of cross-disciplinary roles related to teaching and research in medical ethics, newborn health, and global health. He has conducted extensive research on the ethical and social determinants of newborn and infant survival and, as Director of the Program in Global Newborn Health and Social Change, oversees implementation research, education, and service projects aiming to improve the delivery of neonatal health care in developing countries. He is the Chief Medical Officer of Seed Global Health, a not-for-profit associated with the Center for Global Health at Mass General. In this role, he oversees the implementation of a large-scale PEPFAR funded pilot initiative to strengthen human resources for health in Sub-Saharan Africa. In addition, Dr. Sayeed continues to direct Responsible Conduct of Research Education for HMS, and he annually serves as tutor in the required Medical Ethics and Professionalism HMS-I course. He is the Course Director for a required Ethics course in the Master’s in Global Health Delivery Program. He attends in the BCH Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and serves as Staff Associate on the BCH Bioethics Committee.
