Melissa Abraham
Assistant Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry

Melissa Abraham received a PhD in clinical psychology from Northwestern University Medical School. She completed her internship and postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, and further studied medical ethics and public health at Harvard. She is an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and an associate psychologist at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Joshua Abrams, JD
Office of General Counsel, Partners HealthCare System

Joshua L. Abrams is a patient care, labor, employment, and litigation attorney in the Office of General Counsel at Partners HealthCare System, Inc. In this position, Mr. Abrams represents Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Newton Wellesley Hospital, North Shore Medical Center, and all other Partners health-care entities in proceedings before the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination, Federal District Court, and all Massachusetts courts, as well as in arbitrations.

Ghiath Alahmad, M.D., Ph.D. is a lecturer of bioethics at King Abdullah International Medical Research Center (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia). He received his MD from Damascus University (Syria), and graduated with an advance Master of Bioethics (Erasmus Mundus: KU Leuven, RU Nijmegen, Università degli Studi di Padova). He earned his PhD from KU Leuven (Belgium). His doctoral research project was “Ethics of research biobanks: Islamic perspectives. Ghiath is interested in research ethics and in bioethics in the Middle East context.

Angela Alberti
Communications Coordinator

Angela joined Harvard University in 2001 and Harvard Medical School in 2011. She manages all communications for the HMS Center for Bioethics, overseeing event marketing, print and digital communications, including web, social media, email, video, and the production of the Harvard Medical School Bioethics Journal.

Abdullah Aljoudi, MD is a Consultant in Family and Community Medicine, the Chair of the Ethics Committee, Head of the Research Unit, and Assistant Director of Academic Affairs at King Fahd Hospital of the University of the academic medical center of Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University. He received a MBBS degree from King Faisal University, a diploma in Epidemiology from King Saud University, and an Arab board certificate in Community Medicine. He published in peer reviewed journals including the Lancet and is currently involved in writing the Encyclopedia of Islamic Bioethics.

Marcia Angell, MD
Corresponding Member of the Faculty of Global Health and Social Medicine

Marcia Angell, M. D., is a Corresponding Member of the Faculty of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Faculty Associate in the Center for Bioethics. She stepped down as Editor-in-Chief of the New England Journal of Medicine on June 30, 2000. A graduate of Boston University School of Medicine, she trained in both internal medicine and anatomic pathology. She joined the editorial staff of the New England Journal of Medicine in 1979, became Executive Editor in 1988, and Editor-in-Chief in 1999.

Mark Barnes

Mark focuses his practice in the area of research, advising clients throughout higher education and the health care industry, including pharmaceutical companies, medical device manufacturers, hospitals, and universities. He has extensive experience in legal issues related to research with humans and animals, stem cell and genetic research, research grants and contracts, research misconduct, and international research. Mark also frequently advises clients on clinical trials compliance, Medicare reimbursement, False Claims Act issues, and medical privacy.

Lisa Bastille
Program and Financial Administrator

As the program and finance administrator Lisa Bastille, MSc., is part of the Center’s leadership and manages the daily operations of the Center. A longstanding member of the Harvard community, Ms. Bastille has held positions in communications, institute organization, finance, and grant and contracts.  She earned her undergraduate degree in Human Development and Women Studies from Suffolk University, and earned her Master in Science in Business Management and Research Administration at Emmanuel College.
